I’m Alice McEleney, a qualified and experienced psychotherapist, counsellor and psychologist with a private practice in Galway city centre. My goal is to help you to heal from difficult past experiences, cope with your current circumstances, grow and develop as a unique individual, and experience greater fulfilment in your life.

Life throws many challenges our way, and people seek out psychotherapy and counselling for many reasons. For example, you may be feeling a prolonged sense of sadness and helplessness, anxiety, worry or stress, struggling to cope with a life transition, or experiencing difficulties in your relationships. These are all common challenges, but sometimes they can be difficult to deal with without the opportunity to discuss them freely with another person. I am trained to provide a confidential, non-judgemental and supportive space in which you can explore your experience in depth, gain new insights, and develop your ability to cope, grow and thrive.

I will not judge you, give you advice, or try to “fix” your problems, but I will work with you to help you find the resources within yourself to cope with life’s challenges. I can help you to express what is happening for you, by listening attentively and trying to understand your experience from your point of view. I can encourage you to examine your thoughts and feelings in different ways, which may lead you to new insights and different perspectives. I can assist you in becoming clearer about who you are as a person and what is important to you in life. I can collaborate with you to discover habits or patterns in your life that are no longer working for you. I can support you as you consider your options, try out different ways of relating to yourself and others, and learn to respond to experiences in ways that support your well-being and growth. By exploring your experience in these ways in the context of an honest and trusting relationship, you can develop a deeper and more compassionate connection with yourself and more freedom to make choices about how you live your life.

Research has shown that the most important factor influencing the effectiveness of psychotherapy and counselling is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client. I strive to build an honest, trusting and collaborative relationship with you, in which you can feel secure enough to address what is most challenging for you. I provide a safe and empathic space in which you can explore your experience and develop the inner resources you need to move towards greater freedom and well-being.

I am trained in many different ways of helping people, including both traditional therapeutic methods and new techniques supported by recent research. I work from an integrative perspective, which means that I draw on a range of theories and techniques in a flexible way, depending on what you may need at each moment. As a result, I can adapt how I work in order to meet your unique individual needs, rather than using a “one size fits all” method. I draw predominantly on the following approaches to psychotherapy and counselling: psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred therapy and gestalt therapy.

My approach is a culmination of over twenty years of personal experience, study, research, training and practice in psychotherapy, counselling, psychology, and neuroscience. My formal training includes a Professional Diploma in Psychotherapy and Counselling from The Tivoli Institute and a PhD in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin. I have conduced postdoctoral research in Neuroscience in the USA and worked as a Lecturer in Psychology at Northumbria University in the UK and Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick. Alongside my psychotherapy and counselling practice, I am currently a part-time Associate Lecturer in Psychology with the Open University, where I teach courses on mental health. I also provide psychotherapy and counselling at NUI Galway Student Counselling Service.

I am a Pre-Accredited Member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and a Chartered Psychologist of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). I follow the IACP’s Code of Ethics and Practice for Counsellors/Psychotherapists and the PSI’s Code of Professional Ethics. I attend regular supervision with an experienced and accredited supervisor. I am constantly developing my skills through further training and continuous professional development workshops. My work is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Art therapy is the use of art materials for self expression and reflection in the presence of a qualified art therapist. Art therapy is a unique process, combining creativity and psychotherapy for growth, awareness and healing. It is done in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Why do people see an Art Therapist? Some people can find it difficult to talk directly about their feelings and experiences. Using art materials can be an alternative form of expression. The art process itself can be deeply relaxing, satisfying and positive. It can provide some physical and emotional relief as we express feelings using tactile art materials. Art therapy can potentially provide a space where people can experiment, make a mess, be playful and spontaneous. Do I need to be artistic? No artistic skill is necessary. It is not about making realistic drawings or painting a masterpiece. The artistic quality of the end product is unimportant. The therapist will not make judgments and all work is accepted in its own right. What will happen in a session? Sessions usually last for between 50 minutes to an hour, at the same time and place each week. A range of art materials will be available in each session and you can choose what to make or do, with freedom to express your experiences and thoughts in your own individual way. All images you make, and what you may say about them is treated as confidential Art Therapy can help with: addiction and recovery, anger, bullying, depression, low self esteem and confidence, grief and bereavement, stress and anxiety and much more! Group workshops are also available. Please contact us for further information. The cost for this specialist counselling service is only €50 Euro an appointment. *To cancel or postpone an appointment you must contact us 48 hours before your appointment is due to take place or you may be subject to a cancellation fee. (Caregivers must give written permission to us for young people under 16 and children to participate in art therapy). CRA Number: 20143237 CHY Number: 21366

• Where a person has immediate plans to self harm or plans to harm others.

• Where there is information that a child is at risk of, or has in the past been subjected to, harm/abuse/neglect.

Aware’s confidentiality policy is in line with best practice, and ‘Children First:National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children’ (Department of Children and Youth Affairs, 2011).

Ongoing attendance at the support groups will give you a better understanding of your depression (and elation) and its impact on your relationships and your work or social life. The caring and supportive nature of the groups allows attendees to develop the confidence to identify mood changes at an earlier stage, and so minimise the disruption on daily life.

Helplink’s Play Therapy and Creative Therapy Services

Play Therapy with Helplink is for children aged 3 to 10 years old and our Creative Therapy  service is for young people aged 11 to 15 years old.

These forms of therapy allow children and young people the time and space to work out what may be troubling them and also to express their feelings through their most natural method of communication – PLAY.

In our Galway Play Therapy and Creative Therapy service appointments are 45 minutes long, they are non-directive and non-investigative in nature, whereby the child/young person leads the sessions and the therapist follows. The room holds the play/creative therapy ‘tool kit’ which includes sand, clay, puppets, role play, art materials, therapeutic stories, creative visualisations and music/movement. The aim is that when the child/young person feels comfortable they will begin to express the negative or difficult emotions through their actions, the therapist is able to track and observe what is happening and gently guide the child/young person when necessary.  The therapist provides the space which allows the child/young person to play/be creative as they need to with as few limits as possible but as many as necessary (for physical and emotional safety). All play/creative therapy sessions are confidential, details of the sessions shall only be disclosed in line with child protection procedures.

Who is this service for?: Any child over the age of 3 years can benefit from play therapy appointments as this type of therapy nurtures creative thinking, builds self-esteem, confidence, resilience and much more. Play therapy can be specifically used to support children with any emotional or behavioural difficulties, who have suffered bereavement/loss, suffering with anxiety or are having any family issues but to name a few referral reasons. Creative therapy is for older children aged 11 to 15 as above this service can assist these children across multiple areas. At this time appointments are only available in Galway City.

Our Play/Creative Therapist: Denise Gordon is graduate of NUI Galway and the Academy of Child and Play Psychotherapy. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Practice Based Play Therapy (NFQ:Level 9), as well as this Denise has completed her Degree in Arts with Children Studies (NUIG).  All of Denise’s work is guided by the Play Therapy International Framework and she is a member of Play Therapy Ireland. For more on Play Therapy Ireland, you can visit their Website at http://www.playtherapy.ie/. Furthermore, Denise is supervised, insured and Garda vetted.

Fee for appointment/s: If either parent is working the fee for one appointment is €65. It both parents (or if lone parent) are (is) unemployed one appointment is €45.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) is Ireland’s oldest and most well-known children’s charity.  The ISPCC has a long, proud history of service delivery and advocacy on behalf of children.

Our Vision:

To see an Ireland where all children are heard and valued.

Our Work:
The ISPCC is the only organisation in Ireland providing unique 24 hour support services for children and young people through our Childline service. Childline receives the majority of its 2,300 calls and messages per day after 6pm each evening, when most other support services are closed. Childline receives no government funding, relying on the generosity of donors and volunteers to help run this vital, unique service.

ISPCC support workers and volunteer mentors also work with over 1,500 individual children and families nationwide each year through our suite of ISPCC support services  Our support workers encounter many issues such as emotional and behavioural problems, anxiety, grief, risk of drug and alcohol abuse and early school leaving.

The ISPCC is a child centred organisation providing a range of independent and unique services which are preventative and empowering in nature.

Our Targets:

Inclusion – to include children in society
Support – giving children the support they need to work through emotional problems
Protection - preventing cruelty to children
Consultation & Participation - seeing children as equals and letting them have a say
Citizenship - valuing children’s rights as citizens

Our Funding:
The ISPCC receives less that 10% of funding from the Government and so has to fundraise 90% of its annual income; relying on the generosity of the general public, companies and schools. In 2011, we need to raise over €4.5 million to maintain our services and continue to be there, 24 hours a day, for children and young people in Ireland.

Our Services:
ChildFocus & TeenFocus: Therapeutic interventions for children and young people who are experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties.

Youth Mentoring: A mentor volunteer is matched with a young person to support them.

Childline / Childline Online / TeenTxt: A FREE service for children and young people to access to talk about what's going on for them and what they would like to see happen.

Jigsaw Galway is a free and confidential support service for young people aged 15 – 25, living in Galway city and county.  We focus on a positive mindset and guide young people in dealing with life’s ups and downs.

We have a range of professionals available to find out what a young person needs; we provide non-judgemental listening, emotional support, guided self-help and supported access to other services.

Young people can get in touch with the service by text, email, phone or online.

We believe that whatever support you need, you should be able to get it when you need it and in a place where you feel safe, respected and comfortable.

We also provide information, advice and guidance to others (such as parents, relatives, teachers, youth workers) on how they can best support a young person who they are concerned or worried about, or how they can suggest Jigsaw to that person.

We also work with other professionals throughout the county.  Our aim is to build the ability of the local community to respond to the mental health needs of young people – so that they have better use of the supports in their local town / area.

We want to work towards a community that is supportive of young people’s mental health and well being.  Presentations and talks in schools, workplaces and community groups aim to create a discussion on mental health and raise awareness of the support that Jigsaw Galway and other people can offer.

Hello,

Counselling and psychotherapy are talking therapies to help with life's difficulties. This is what I do.

I have the greatest respect for anyone coming into a therapeutic relationship for healing from suffering from their life's difficulties. I deeply respect that for every person the journey through life's relationships is unique as is the emotional impact on everyone unique.

I find it's very common that when suffering is shared by talking, energetic change happens internally and beauty emerges i.e. actual feelings of relief replace the suffering. What's often the case is needing someone to tell who will really listen. This is what I continually train every day to do.

It's my experience of life that lives change when you find support in the environment of Nature including human contact. I hope you meet the right peson, at the right time, with the right skill and experience to share. I have some that may be useful to you and I am interested in working with you to help you get the change you want.

I am a gestalt psychotherapist. I am a re-accredited member and supervisor in IAHIP a national professional association for humanistic and integrative psychotherapy. I'm also a member of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy.

Many people find it very useful, a relief, to simply find a safe place where they can share the difficulties in their lives' with someone. The feeling of finding a confidential place and a skilled person with which to explore telling your story is a cornerstone of the service. A different perspective from a someoen not connected in any way with you except in the counselling room is a special safety in relationship that I hold as sacred. This relationship is the container for whatever suffering you have been experiencing and want to change.

In the warm suppport of this relationship, focussing all the time on your relief from suffering and how or what YOU want to change in yourself, we'll explore ways to get your needs met in your environment, more efficiently than you are experiencing at present. To this end I will help you increase your present awareness of your existence and arising out of your new awarenesses I'll give you support to make choices.

I have almost twenty years experience in the field of counselling and psychotherapy. In 2007 I graduated as a gestalt psychotherapist with my diploma from the Irish Gestalt Centre in Carlow. Since then I continue to delve into learning more ways to recover from life's difficulties.

In 2017, an experienced psychtherapist, I was successful in meeting the rigorous standards of IAHIP to became a psychotherapy supervisor.

I'm within easy access if you're living in South Roscommon or East Galway. My ofice in 2 Garden Vale, Athlone is situated conventiently so close to the railway and bus stations.

I see clients for individual or couples counselling psychotherapy.

If you think you are suffering from mental health difficulties depression, bereavement, stress, anxiety, from the effects of trauma or relationship difficulties, I am here to help you if I can.

For an appointment please telephone me, preferably during daylight hours but try phoning for appointment anytime. I'm available in Athlone any day from 9am or evening up to 9pm except tuesdays.

For information, please telephone me during office hours. Of course you can email me anytime. If I can't answer you immediately I will respond honestly to your request as soon as I can.

My best I can be for you

Jim

Adults: Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling can a provide safe supportive place to find new ways to address a crisis in work or a relationship. Psychotherapy works on long standing problems often rooted in difficult traumatic early life experiences which when spoken about in detail can enable you to make better choices in relationships and life in general.

Counselling, sometimes called “talk therapy,” is a conversation or a series of conversations between the counsellor and client.  Counselling usually focuses on a particular problem and in taking steps decided by the client to address this problem.  The problem is often discussed in the present tense without too much attention to past experiences. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from counselling or psychotherapy – however, it can be a great support or resource at times of crisis or difficulty in our lives.

Psychotherapy, like counselling, is based on a healing relationship between the therapist and client. Psychotherapy takes place over a series of meetings between the therapist and client over a longer timespan  than counselling. It enables you to deal with deeper, more long-term issues that may have their roots in your past, (e.g. traumatic issues from childhood) which are affecting our present life.

http://marykilrainehannon.com/adults

Adolescents: Counselling

Adolescence is a complex developmental stage, starting around twelve years of age. It is distinct from childhood and yet is not adulthood. Adolescent therapy helps teenagers and their families to negotiate the difficulties that can sometimes emerge at this time.  These include challenges in relationships at home, school, moving to third level education, bullying, sexuality, eating disorders, withdrawal, depression, anxiety, aggression, suicidal thoughts, family changes and bereavement.  Counselling can help the adolescent understand and make sense of their feelings/behaviour and who they are and want to be. It can also be the place where they learn about relating with a safe and caring adult.

I provide confidential one to one counselling and psychotherapy. I offer teenagers a safe, non- judgemental space  to explore the issues and challenges that they are meeting their daily lives.

It is important that adolescents feel secure to talk in a confidential place.  As such parents will be asked to allow their child the freedom to attend their sessions on their own.

I am interest in working with this age group as I believe that many of the problems faced by adults later in life could be helped with counselling and psychotherapy earlier in life.

Play Therapy refers to a variety of techniques and methods used to help children  who are experiencing difficulties with their emotions or behaviour.  Playing, drawing, building, using sand and pretending, as well as talking, are important ways of sharing feelings and resolving problems for children and adolescents.

Play Therapy helps children understand confused feelings and upsetting events. Rather than having to explain what is troubling them, as adult therapy usually expects, children use play to communicate at their own level and at their own pace. Play Therapy helps children work through emotional, social and behavioural difficulties and helps address family problems. It uses the medium of play, rather than talk, to help the child learn to express themselves, explore and make sense of the world in which they live and resolve any difficult or painful experiences.

Play therapy may involve an individual child, a family, or multiple families or a group of children. In children and adolescents, playing, drawing, building, using sand and pretending, as well as talking, are important ways of sharing feelings and resolving problems.

We provide help for anyone who is having problems in their lives because they are drinking alcohol heavily or dependently. The treatment is done in your own home. This may also include an Alcohol Detox and this is done, again in your own home, by a registered, qualified nurse. Our treatment is called Integrated Treatment or Dual Diagnosis Care. Dual Diagnosis are the words you may hear when someone is talking about a person that has a mental health difficulty, like anxiety, stress or depression and along with that they also have an alcohol or drug problem. This means that the person is treated for their mental health condition along with their addiction or alcohol abuse problem. If both problems are diagnosed then both must be treated or neither will get better.

What we do

We aim to empower people with mental ill health and their families through support, information and education. We also advocate for social change, promoting and defending the right of all those affected by mental ill health to equal rights and quality services.

Our core beliefs

All of the work we do is based on the following principles:

  • People with mental ill health should at all times be accorded equal rights, entitlements and opportunities available to any other member of society, and should be empowered to participate in the life of the community;
  • Family members, the majority of whom are the primary providers of mental healthcare in the community should be accorded full recognition and support by the institutions of the State, and be empowered to address their own needs;
  • A history of mental ill health should not be a cause for discrimination in any form, nor should it inhibit the individual’s right of equal access to training, education and employment/opportunities;
  • We should foster a partnership approach with other like-minded organisations.

Our vision

Our main organisational objectives are:
  1. To promote the development of parallel self-help groups for people with mental ill health and their family members and carers
  2. To empower people with mental ill health and their family members through support, information and education.
  3. To promote and defend the right of all those affected by mental ill health to person centred and appropriate services, which support recovery.
  4. To engage in public awareness activities aimed at challenging stigma and discrimination and promoting the rights and needs of all those affected by mental ill health.
  5. To influence positive policy changes in the provision of mental healthcare services.

I offer both long and short term talking therapy, lasting between 6 weeks and ongoing as long as you feel comfortable and the therapy is beneficial to you. I also offer counseling for couples. Each session lasts for 50 minutes. We can discuss the likely duration for the therapy in your first session, but many clients prefer to leave it open rather than working to time limits.
As a therapist trained in both Transpersonal and Integrative techniques, I tailor my approach largely to you as an individual as well as to the stage in the therapeutic process that you are at. In addition to therapeutic discussion on the issue you present, we may work with the creative imagination which can be very powerful, should you be open, ready and willing to do this kind of exercise. For example, we may use dreams, music, sand trays, visualisations, imagery and more in order to guide you to an exploration of your own inner knowing.
I work with issues such as (but not limited to) the following:
Abuse (emotional, sexual, physical, verbal)
Addiction
Agoraphobia
Anger
Anxiety
Bereavement
Career / life direction

Work4You is a vocational assessment service for people who have an acquired brain injury (ABI) and who want to return to work, training or education. Work4You also provides essential ABI information and education for employers, tutors and trainers who are supporting people affected by an ABI. ABI Ireland has three Work4You teams located in the Border, Midlands and West Region. Each team includes an Occupational Therapist and two Vocational Facilitators who will carry out one-to-one assessments as well as providing on-going vocational guidance and support. Every Work4You participant will be supported to develop a Personal Progression Plan (PPP) which will enable them to set, and achieve goals relating to education, training and employment. The west team covers the counties Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

A full Work4You assessment is carried out by an Occupational Therapist, highlighting each Work4You participants work skills, knowledge and experience. The Work4You team use Valpar assessment tools while also taking a holistic look at the participants’ life. Focusing on the individuals functional and work capacity, identifying transferrable skills.
Work4You will:
- Give the individual a chance to get involved in tasks which they may find more challenging, such as identify areas of work they find difficult or impossible to do
- Provide assistance in setting vocational goals; which include outlining potential work, training and education options
- Ensure that those with an ABI receive feedback, recommendations and strategies with which they can build on their vocational strength
- Develop a sustainable working environment for both the employee, employer, student, tutor and trainer.

Work4You referrals can be made by the person with an ABI, a family member, or employer as well as healthcare and allied professionals. Work4You participants must meet the following criteria:
- Have sustained an ABI
- Live in counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Galway, Offaly, Longford, Westmeath, Louth, Cavan, Monaghan or Laois
- 16-65 years
- Receive a Department of Social Protection payment
- Be approved by the Department of Social Protection to participate in Work4You

ABI Ireland will coordinate an eligibility check on behalf of the Department of Social Protection. Once approval has been received the Work4You team will begin to work with the individual to ensure an effective Personal Progression Plan is put in place to help them return to work, training or education. In the event of someone not being eligible for this programme, the team will link them in with appropriate community support services.

Work4You is funded by the Department of Social Protection and the European Social Fund under the Disability Activation Project (DACT). The programme ‘Work4You’ is the first community based neuro-assessment service of its kind in Ireland.

The Work4You hub for the West and North-West Region is located at Upper Chapel Street, Castlebar. For more information about Work4You contact 094 9026 630 or see www.abiireland.ie
